Smart Roaming Promos 2026: Data, Rates and Activation Abroad
Smart Prepaid can connect outside the Philippines, but roaming service and mobile data are not the same thing. A SIM registered on a partner network may still lack usable internet without a current roaming data pack. Before every trip, confirm your roaming status, check which destination pack fits, and keep enough regular load for activation or paid calls and texts.
Magic Data, Power All, and other domestic Smart promos do not replace GigaRoam abroad. Roaming status, regular load, and an international data pack solve three different parts of the connection. This guide covers GigaRoam data packs, activation before and after departure, supported countries, roaming rates, SMS and OTP access, and step-by-step fixes when Smart roaming is not working.
Smart Prepaid Roaming: The Three Things You Need
Three separate layers keep a Smart Prepaid line working abroad, and confusing them is the most common source of wasted money or lost connectivity.
- Basic roaming service: The SIM registers on a supported partner network outside the Philippines. Signal alone confirms registration — it does not guarantee mobile data access.
- Regular load: Standard prepaid balance that funds the activation request, pay-per-use calls and SMS, and account continuity. It is not a data bundle.
- Roaming data pack (GigaRoam): A destination-specific data allocation purchased through the GigaRoam portal. Without an active pack, mobile data typically will not work even if the SIM shows signal bars.
Domestic Smart promos such as Magic Data, Power All, or ordinary promo load are built for Philippine networks. They are not substitutes for a GigaRoam pack and will not deliver data abroad.
Current Smart GigaRoam Data Packs
GigaRoam is Smart's current web platform for checking roaming status and buying destination-specific data roaming packs. The packs below are verified against the current GigaRoam help page. Prices depend on the destination selected and are displayed on the GigaRoam portal before confirmation — check the live price rather than relying on estimates.
A GigaRoam pack can be pre-booked before departure. For the regional packs listed below, validity begins when Smart detects the subscriber abroad, not when the pack is purchased. Multiple packs may be pre-booked and queued.
| Pack | Data | Validity | Coverage focus | When validity begins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GigaRoam Asia 3GB | 3 GB | 10 days | Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam | When Smart detects the subscriber abroad |
| GigaRoam Europe 7GB | 7 GB | 21 days | EU and Schengen area; also usable in transit in Hong Kong, Singapore, Turkey, UAE, and Qatar on listed partners | When Smart detects the subscriber abroad |
| GigaRoam USA & Canada 3GB | 3 GB | 21 days | USA (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Guam, Mexico; transit use in Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan | When Smart detects the subscriber abroad |
| GigaRoam USA & Canada 10GB | 10 GB | 30 days | Same coverage as the 3 GB pack above | When Smart detects the subscriber abroad |
After your allocation is consumed, data roaming becomes unavailable. Background app traffic can also use roaming data, so confirm that the intended pack is active and monitor usage accordingly.
Smart Roaming Countries and Preferred Partner Networks
A broad zone name such as "Asia" or "Europe" still depends on the specific countries and preferred partner networks listed by GigaRoam. Smart's automatic network selection is the default on arrival — the phone picks a supported partner without manual input. If service is poor or unavailable, manual network selection through your phone's settings lets you try another official roaming partner.
Asia
The GigaRoam Asia 3GB pack covers a wide set of destinations across East, Southeast, and South Asia. Selected verified countries and preferred partners include:
- Australia: Vodafone, Telstra, Optus
- Hong Kong: Hutchison 3HK, China Mobile
- India: Bharti Airtel
- Indonesia: Telkomsel, Indosat
- Malaysia: DiGi
- Singapore: StarHub
- South Korea: SK Telecom, KT
- Taiwan: Chunghwa, FarEasTone
- Thailand: AIS, DTAC
- Vietnam: VinaPhone, Viettel
Additional covered countries include Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Laos, Macau, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka on their listed preferred partners.
Europe
The GigaRoam Europe 7GB pack covers most countries in the EU and Schengen area. Selected verified countries and partners include:
- France: Orange
- Germany: T-Mobile, Vodafone
- Ireland: Three Ireland, Vodafone
- Italy: TIM, Wind, Vodafone
- Netherlands: KPN, T-Mobile, Vodafone
- Spain: Telefonica Moviles, Vodafone
- United Kingdom: Three UK, Vodafone
The pack also supports transit use in Hong Kong, Singapore, Turkey, the UAE, and Qatar on listed preferred partners.
USA, Canada, Guam, and Transit Countries
The GigaRoam USA & Canada packs (3 GB and 10 GB) cover:
- USA, including Alaska and Hawaii: AT&T
- Canada: Bell, SaskTel, Telus
- Guam: Docomo Pacific, IT&E
- Mexico: Telcel
Transit use is supported in Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan on GigaRoam's listed preferred partners.
Smart Roaming Call and Text Promos
Roaming voice and text bundles are separate products from data packs. They are designed for making calls and sending SMS while abroad, not for mobile data access.
Smart Help currently publishes two Smart Prepaid and TNT voice-roaming bundles:
| Product | Price | Included use | Validity | Coverage note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roam Call & Text Lite | PHP 50 | 5 credits; one credit equals one roaming voice minute or one roaming SMS | 24 hours | Published for Australia, Indonesia, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey, UAE, USA |
| Roam Call & Text 150 | PHP 150 | 12 roaming voice minutes and 12 roaming SMS messages | 3 days | Published for the same supported voice-roaming countries |
Smart Help says prepaid voice roaming should be activated before leaving by texting ROAM ON followed by the supported country name to 333. If you are already roaming and plan to move to another supported country, send the country-specific ROAM ON command before leaving the current country. Voice roaming is available only in selected destinations; some destinations may support SMS without voice.
How to Activate Smart Roaming Before You Travel
Follow these steps before departure to avoid connectivity problems at your destination:
- Confirm the Smart Prepaid account is active and SIM-registered.
- Maintain at least PHP 100 regular load — this is the minimum required for the ROAM ON activation request.
- Check your roaming status through the GigaRoam roaming-status page at gigaroam.smart.com.ph, or dial *133# and choose Check My Roaming Status.
- If roaming is not active, text ROAM ON to 333 and wait for Smart's SMS confirmation.
- Pre-book a suitable GigaRoam data pack through the portal if you need mobile data at your destination.
- On arrival, turn on Mobile Data and Data Roaming in your phone settings and wait for the pack-activation notification.
Smart advises activating roaming before travel. Check early enough to resolve any issue before departure rather than assuming a fixed processing window.
Can You Activate Smart Roaming While Already Abroad?
Yes, but recovery is harder once the SIM has no signal abroad. If your Smart Prepaid SIM shows no service at your destination, try the following:
- Connect to available Wi-Fi — this is the essential first step since SMS commands and app logins may not work without a signal.
- Message Smart through the official Smart Communications Facebook channel with your Smart number, current country, device model, and observed error.
- Call the Smart roaming hotline at +63 2 8848 8878 if you are traveling with someone who has an active Smart or TNT roaming number.
- Email SmartRoaming@smart.com.ph as listed on the GigaRoam help page.
Recovery through these channels is not guaranteed to succeed or complete within a fixed time frame. An SMS-based activation command such as ROAM ON requires the SIM to already have signal, which may not be the case when abroad with no service.
How to Check Whether Smart Roaming Is Active
You can confirm roaming status through several methods:
- GigaRoam roaming-status page: Visit gigaroam.smart.com.ph and enter your number to check.
- Dial *133# and select Check My Roaming Status.
- Look for Smart's SMS confirmation after sending ROAM ON to 333.
- Check for a welcome or activation message from Smart upon arrival at your destination.
For a broader look at your prepaid balance and account status, see the Smart balance inquiry guide.
Smart Roaming Rates Without a Data Pack
Current data-pack prices and pay-per-use roaming rates depend on the destination and the information shown on the live GigaRoam portal. Always review the current options before enabling data or making calls.
- Outgoing SMS: Smart says an outgoing SMS to the Philippines starts at PHP 20. TxTipid offers PHP 2 per text to the Philippines. Standard roaming SMS rates vary by country and partner network — actual rates may be PHP 20, PHP 25, or PHP 30 depending on the zone.
- Voice calls: Call rates vary by destination and partner network. Smart advises checking the current destination rate and maintaining enough regular load or a roaming call allocation.
- Mobile data without a pack: Do not assume that Smart will apply a fixed fallback rate. Pre-book a current GigaRoam pack, confirm its activation through Smart's SMS notification, and check the account before using data. When the active allocation is fully consumed, GigaRoam data service becomes unavailable.
How Much Regular Load Does Smart Roaming Need?
The activation requirement and ongoing account validity are two separate rules.
- Activation: Smart currently requires PHP 100 regular load to activate Smart Prepaid roaming through ROAM ON to 333.
- The old PHP 50 maintaining-balance rule while abroad is no longer required. Smart says roaming service can remain active without load, but regular load is still needed for paid calls, outgoing SMS, and account continuity.
- Account validity: Current Smart Help states that ordinary Smart Prepaid call/text-card value is valid for 365 days after loading. When a prepaid account balance reaches zero, the user has 180 days to reload before disconnection.
- GigaRoam pack validity is separate. A roaming data pack has its own validity period and does not extend regular-load validity, prevent SIM expiry, or replace regular load.
For detailed rules on keeping your SIM alive long-term while abroad, see the Smart roaming maintaining-balance guide.
Top Up a Smart Roaming Number from Abroad
An active Smart Prepaid number can receive regular load from another person, which is especially useful when the account needs a reload for activation, paid calls, SMS, or account continuity. Smart's own methods include call/text-card loading through RELOAD and a 14-digit PIN sent to 1510, free call/text-card loading through *133# (where available), and PasaLoad sent from the Philippines — Smart limits PasaLoad to PHP 200 per day for roaming subscribers.
For a simpler overseas option, you can send Smart load to the Philippines from abroad through PinoyLoads, a Philippines-focused online loading service operating since 2013. Enter the Smart number to open the current Smart load options compatible with that line. The selected product and total price are displayed in USD before payment. Eligible cards can be used through the Smart credit-card recharge or Smart debit-card recharge checkout paths. PayPal is also available. No registration, KYC, or sign-up is required. Customers receive email and status updates, and delivery is normally completed within a few minutes after confirmed payment.
Regular load is the appropriate starting point for roaming activation, paid calls and SMS, or account continuity. A local Smart promo or domestic data bundle is not a substitute for a roaming package.
Smart Roaming Phone Settings on iPhone and Android
Proper phone settings matter as much as having the right pack. On arrival at your destination:
- Turn on Mobile Data and Data Roaming in your phone's cellular or network settings. Without both enabled, a GigaRoam pack cannot deliver data.
- Start with automatic network selection. The phone will pick a supported roaming partner. If service is poor or unavailable, Smart Help says you can try another official roaming partner through manual network selection in your phone's settings.
- If 5G, 4G, or LTE does not appear, Smart advises turning the phone off, waiting at least two minutes, turning it back on, and waiting for service registration.
- APN settings: Smart's current roaming activation page states that Smart SIM users do not need to change APN settings. Do not replace your APN with a foreign carrier's APN.
- Dual-SIM users: Confirm that the Smart SIM is enabled and selected for the intended mobile-data or SMS function.
- Device, partner network, and country all affect whether 5G or VoLTE is available — these features are not guaranteed in every destination.
Smart Roaming Not Working: Symptom-by-Symptom Fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| No Service / Emergency Calls Only | Roaming not activated, account issue, unsupported partner selection, or delayed network registration | Connect to Wi-Fi and contact Smart; restart the device; try automatic or a verified partner network through manual selection |
| Signal but no mobile data | No active roaming data pack; Mobile Data or Data Roaming is off | Confirm a current GigaRoam pack is active; enable Mobile Data and Data Roaming; restart the phone for at least two minutes; try an official partner network |
| SMS works but data does not | Basic roaming registration works without a data pack, but data requires a separate roaming allocation | Confirm GigaRoam pack activation and remaining allocation; do not buy a domestic promo expecting it to work abroad |
| GigaRoam pack purchased but not active | Validity for regional packs begins when Smart detects the subscriber abroad; destination or partner may not be covered | Confirm the destination and partner are covered; look for Smart's activation SMS; contact Smart support if still unavailable |
| Calls do not work | Voice roaming not available in that destination, insufficient regular load or call-bundle allocation, or incorrect number format | Confirm voice roaming is available; check regular load or call-bundle allocation; use correct international number format; restart and try another official roaming partner |
| OTP does not arrive | SIM has no roaming signal, dual-SIM selection issue, or the bank/app is not generating the OTP | Confirm the SIM has roaming signal and can receive ordinary SMS; check dual-SIM selection and device message settings; see the OTP troubleshooting guide for bank-side diagnostics |
Receiving SMS and Bank OTPs Abroad
A roaming data pack is not required to receive an SMS, but the Smart SIM must be active and registered on a partner network. A working roaming signal allows the network to receive incoming SMS, while OTP delivery still depends on the bank or app generating and sending the message.
Smart transports the message, but Smart cannot guarantee that BDO, BPI, GCash, Maya, or another service will generate or deliver every OTP. The bank or app controls whether an OTP is issued and when it is sent. If ordinary SMS arrives but a specific OTP does not, the bank or app may be the source of the delay.
For bank-specific OTP troubleshooting, including dual-SIM settings and message filtering, see the linked guide above.
Smart Prepaid vs TNT, Postpaid, eSIM, and Smart Bro
This article focuses on Smart Prepaid. Other Smart account types follow different activation and support rules.
| Account type | Roaming position | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Prepaid | Main subject; activates through GigaRoam, *133#, or ROAM ON to 333; requires PHP 100 regular load | Do not apply postpaid activation rules or Smart Bro account terms |
| TNT | Smart Help groups TNT with Smart Prepaid for activation and roaming SMS guidance; shares GigaRoam infrastructure | Do not assume TNT has identical support paths — see the TNT roaming guide for TNT-specific details |
| Smart Postpaid | Uses different activation and support rules, such as *888 or *800 for Infinity | Do not apply prepaid PHP 100 or ROAM ON instructions to Postpaid accounts |
| Smart Prepaid eSIM | A Smart Prepaid subscription delivered as eSIM — not a separate travel eSIM product | Do not assume every roaming rule is automatically identical unless Smart treats the account as standard Prepaid — see the Smart eSIM guide |
| Smart Bro / Pocket WiFi | Official public roaming guidance does not clearly establish Smart Bro prepaid roaming support | Do not promise that Smart Bro or Pocket WiFi works abroad or that GigaRoam applies; Smart Bro has a 120-day zero-load rule, different from the ordinary Prepaid 180-day rule |
What to Do When You Return to the Philippines
After returning, text ROAM OFF to 333 to restore local calls, SMS, and data services. Current Smart Help for voice roaming says deactivation takes about one hour.
Before buying a domestic Smart promo, confirm that local service is working — Mobile Data, calls, and SMS should function on the Philippine network. If local service does not resume after an hour, restart your phone and check that Data Roaming is no longer needed for domestic use.
Conclusion
Smart Prepaid roaming abroad comes down to a few decisions: confirm roaming status before you leave, choose the right GigaRoam data pack for your destination instead of relying on a domestic promo, and keep regular load separate from your pack's validity for activation and paid services. If you are already abroad with no signal, connect to Wi-Fi and reach Smart through Facebook, the roaming hotline, or email. When you need to add regular load or review compatible products, use the Smart mini-form above for a quick, registration-free top-up.
